1983

South MacDill restaurant, bar and arcade from a Tampa hospitality group. Publishes Bucs and Gators schedules, NFL and college football all season, and Premier League on weekends. Says it has 80 TVs.

220 East

Davis Islands · new american, seafood, pizza

220 East sits on Davis Boulevard in the small village strip at the top of Davis Islands, and its own site calls it a locally owned American kitchen 24 years strong. The menu runs wider than most neighbourhood rooms: shrimp and grits, a hand-cut New York strip, pizzas including a dill-pickle one the site tells you to trust it on, and a weekend brunch with chicken and waffles. Its Cuban sandwich is built on Cuban bread from La Segunda, which it names on the menu. Several dishes are marked GF on the menu itself.

7th + Grove

Ybor City · southern, caribbean, guyanese

7th + Grove sits on East Seventh Avenue in Ybor City and describes itself as the flagship of the 7th + Grove Hospitality group. The cooking is Southern comfort food crossed with Guyanese flavours, served with what the site calls creatively crafted cocktails, and the room runs late on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It is one of the Ybor rooms Creative Loafing Tampa Bay lists among Tampa Bay's restaurants, and it leans into events... a Saturday day party with hookahs and small bites, NFL Sundays, private parties and catering.

Go early. It turns into a late-night spot later in the evening.

Al's Finger Licking Good Bar-B-Que & Soul Food

Ybor City · $ · bbq, southern, soul food

Al's cooks Tennessee-style barbecue in Ybor City, dry-rubbed ribs smoked over wood with a tomato-based sauce, and it has won best barbecue in Tampa more times than anyone bothers to count. The food is family food in the literal sense, with dishes on the menu named for the people they came from ... Uncle John's smoked sausage, Aunt Nita's black eyed peas, Sparky's pulled pork, Mazie's serve-it-up yellow rice and chicken. The business started as a concession stand in 2003 and became a sit-down restaurant in 2009, and it now runs barbecue and soul food out of one address on East Seventh Avenue after folding the two shops together.

Babushka's Temple Terrace

Temple Terrace · russian, ukrainian, eastern european

Babushka's started in 2018 because a Russian international student at USF noticed that Eastern European food was missing from a city that had almost every other cuisine, and talked his family into opening a restaurant. The name is the Russian word for grandmother, chosen because, as the restaurant puts it, 'in most families back in Eastern Europe, Babushka is usually a person who cooks the best food.' The kitchen runs borscht, pierogi, piroshki, sweet and savoury blinchiki and a homemade honey cake, and there is a kids' menu and a bar menu alongside the main one. The Temple Terrace room on N 56th Street is a short drive from the USF campus where the idea started.

Cafe Hey

Tampa Heights · $ · sandwiches, coffee, breakfast

Cafe Hey is the small coffee and sandwich room on North Franklin Street that Tampa Heights has used for years, and Creative Loafing calls it a Tampa Heights staple. It runs a vegan brunch every Sunday until it sells out, which sits oddly and happily next to a menu of meaty sandwiches. Thursday night is open mic, and the bill is musicians, comedians, poets and whoever else signs up.

This is a music venue. It is loud when a show is on.

District South Kitchen & Craft

Virginia Park · $$ · new american, cocktails

District South sits on South Dale Mabry and tells its own origin plainly: a group of friends could not find a place in South Tampa that put quality cooking, handcrafted cocktails and a warm room together, so they built one. The room splits between cosy dining space and an outdoor patio, with a bar that the restaurant describes as the lively end of it. It publishes separate lunch, dinner, brunch, happy hour, dessert and late night menus, which is a lot of service windows for a neighbourhood restaurant.

Elevage SoHo Kitchen & Bar

SoHo · new american

Elevage is the restaurant inside the Epicurean Hotel on South Howard, directly across the street from Bern's Steak House, whose group helped create the hotel with Mainsail Lodging. It serves from 7 in the morning, running brunch into mid-afternoon, then a lite bites window, then dinner to 10. Valet is free before 7 PM and 10 dollars after. It was in the 2025 Florida MICHELIN Guide as Recommended and is not in the 2026 selection, so it carries no Michelin designation now.

Front Porch Grille & Bart's Tavern

Seminole Heights · american, seafood, pizza

Front Porch Grille has been on North Florida Avenue since 2002, which makes it one of the longest-running independent restaurants in Seminole Heights. It works out of a converted two-storey bungalow, the kind of house the neighbourhood is built from, with Bart's Tavern as the bar side of the same operation. Weekend service starts at 8am, so it is a breakfast room as well as a dinner one, and the kitchen keeps its own daily specials and happy hour separate from the main menu.

Gaspar's Grotto

Ybor City · american, cuban, sandwiches

Gaspar's Grotto sits on Seventh Avenue in the middle of Ybor City and builds its whole identity on Jose Gaspar, the legendary Gulf pirate Tampa throws Gasparilla for every January. Its own site says the bar pays homage to the legendary local pirate Jose Gaspar and celebrates Tampa's immigrant past. There is an indoor bar and dining room plus two outdoor patios with live entertainment weekly, and Sunday brunch has become the thing it is known for. The bar also runs a pig roast, a VIP bottle lounge, weddings and its own Ybor Gift Company merchandise shop.

Go early. It turns into a late-night spot later in the evening.

Graze 1910

Tampa Heights · american, breakfast

Graze 1910 is the all-day breakfast counter in the Heights Public Market at Armature Works, and its name carries the building's street number. The plates are waffles, egg dishes, gourmet toasts and burgers, which the building describes as refined American comfort food, and the seats look out over the river and the downtown skyline.

Howard & Platt

SoHo · new american, cocktails

Howard & Platt is the polished early-evening choice at Howard and Platt. The full bar, covered patio, dinner menu, and weekend brunch make it better for a seated first round than a 3am finish. Happy hour runs Tuesday through Friday from 4 to 6pm in the bar area.

Hula Bay Club

Ballast Point & Interbay · seafood, american

Hula Bay sits on the water at the end of Tyson Avenue in the Westshore Marina District, and its own site bills it as Tampa's premier waterfront restaurant with Hawaiian leanings. The complex runs a waterfront bar alongside the dining room and a second bar, Duke's Retired Surfers Bar, which shares its reservation system. It posts live music and a brunch service.

Live music some nights. Go before the band starts if you want to talk.

Jerk Hut Island Grille & Beach Club

University Area · jamaican, caribbean

The Fowler Avenue room with the bright teal roof is the flagship of four Jerk Hut locations, all of them in Tampa, and it is the only one that is a full restaurant rather than a carryout window. It runs a Jamaican lunch buffet Monday through Friday and a Sunday brunch buffet with live reggae, alongside a full liquor bar and a separate carryout counter. On Friday nights the patio turns into a market of Tampa Bay vendors with live cooking stations that runs to midnight, and the ladies' night behind it goes to 3am. The Tampa Bay Times included Jerk Hut in its list of Tampa Bay's 25 most iconic restaurants, a list that required at least a decade in business to qualify.

Go early. It turns into a late-night spot later in the evening.

Meeting House

SoHo · $$ · american, burgers, diner

Meeting House opened in August 2026 in the South Howard space that had been Daily Eats, and calls itself a new-age American diner where coastal charm meets a laid-back Venice, California spirit. Burgers carry the menu and the weekend opens at 9 in the morning for brunch. Its motto, printed as the only headline on the site, is meet, eat, repeat. It belongs to Ciccio Restaurant Group, which is a Tampa company, not a national one.

Michael's Grill

Carrollwood · new american, italian, seafood

Michael's Grill has been on N Dale Mabry since 2000 and calls itself a neighborhood hidden Carrollwood gem, which is close to how Creative Loafing described it when it reviewed the place: a tiny restaurant tucked into a strip plaza off Dale Mabry that took the reviewer three turnarounds to find. Michael and Andrea Reilly opened it after years in the business, he as a chef in Miami restaurants for 14 years and she as a baker and pastry chef, and the review recorded the chef coming out of the kitchen in his whites to talk to tables while the dining room filled up. The menu is fresh New American standards with French and Italian classics behind it, run across lunch, dinner and a weekend brunch. The room has terra cotta floors and a bar that looks into a cramped kitchen.

Oak & Ola

Tampa Heights · new american

Oak & Ola is the sit-down dining room inside Armature Works, the restored streetcar warehouse on the Heights waterfront, and it takes its name from the two streets that meet outside. Executive chef Margaret LaVetty came up through China Grill in New York, Campanile in Los Angeles and Nemo in Miami Beach, started cooking in professional kitchens at 14 and finished at the California Culinary Academy at 19; around Tampa she picked up the nickname Captain of Crunch for her granola. Chef de cuisine Jaime Nava has worked the kitchen for close to a decade and writes the weekly dinner features. The menu is sourced and rewritten by season, and the room keeps a memorial to chef TJ Hoferichter, who died in 2024.

Phoenix Lebanese Restaurant

Temple Terrace · lebanese, middle eastern

Phoenix opened on N 56th Street in Temple Terrace in early 2025 cooking Lebanese breakfast and brunch, which is a rarer thing in Tampa than Lebanese dinner. The kitchen works saj bread on a domed griddle, thin and crisp, filled with cheese and topped with za'atar, and serves it with a house Mosaic Hummus; the same bread carries their Lebanese-style pizza. Balila, slow-cooked chickpeas with olive oil, lemon, garlic and cumin finished with pine nuts and parsley, is the heartiest thing on the menu, and the shakshuka is seasoned their own way. The owners make a point of the coffee: in Lebanon, they told That's So Tampa, offering a guest a freshly brewed cup is a ritual of friendship and respect, and they keep it.

Predalina

Downtown · mediterranean

Predalina is a waterfront Mediterranean restaurant and lounge on East Cumberland Avenue in the Water Street district, a concept by Oxford Commons. It runs dinner, dessert, weekend brunch and a full cocktail and spirit-free drinks list, and it is one of the few MICHELIN-listed rooms in Tampa that stays open past midnight, to 1am on Friday and Saturday. It has been MICHELIN Recommended in both the 2025 and 2026 Florida selections.

Open late. Go earlier if you want a calmer room.

Shuffle

Tampa Heights · $ · american, bar food

Shuffle is a bar on North Tampa Street in Tampa Heights built around shuffleboard courts, with a full kitchen, six rotating taps and an outdoor stage that carries live music at least weekly. Brunch is a fixture, and the menu is straightforward bar food rather than anything precious. Creative Loafing lists it as a place families can actually use, because the backyard gives children somewhere to be while the adults eat.

Live music some nights. Go before the band starts if you want to talk.

Soul de Cuba Cafe

Seminole Heights · cuban

Soul de Cuba opened on North Florida Avenue in Seminole Heights and cooks from what it calls authentic family recipes, built around the Cuban sandwich, slow-roasted lechon and Sunday brunch. The kitchen puts on themed evenings rather than just service, including a Taste of Havana plate of ropa vieja, lechon asado, arroz moro, beef empanada and platanos maduros, and an Evening in Havana night of Cuban food, music and stories. There is a bar, a patio and catering for celebrations and corporate events.

Tampa Burgers & Pirates

Downtown

A pirate-themed sports bar and burger spot on N Ashley Dr, across the street from the University of Tampa. Its own pages list UFC nights, Lightning and Bucs game deals, weekday happy hour and live music on Fridays.

Live music some nights. Go before the band starts if you want to talk.

The Pearl

Downtown · seafood, new american

The Pearl is a restaurant, tavern and oyster bar in the Water Street district, serving made-from-scratch entrees, shareable plates and seasonal oysters with a long cocktail and beer list. It runs lunch on weekdays, brunch at weekends and dinner seven days, with a weekday happy hour from 2pm to 5pm. Its own site records inclusion in the 2024 through 2026 MICHELIN Guide.

Trip's Diner

Seminole Heights · $ · american, diner, breakfast

Trips Diner opened on March 12, 2012 on North Florida Avenue in Seminole Heights and is named after the owners' triplets, Libby, Will and John. Its own description of itself is modest on purpose: a not-too-fancy neighbourhood restaurant that offers a variety of simple food. Breakfast is served all day, alongside salads, sandwiches, meatloaf, pasta and chicken. The family also runs diners in St. Petersburg and Seminole, which are in Pinellas County and out of this site's scope.
